Raking bond is used to construct thick walls in which bonding bricks are kept at an inclination to the direction of the wall.
This arrangement provides longitudinal stability to the wall.
Raking bond is done by methods namely diagonal bond and herringbone bond.
In diagonal type of raking bond, the bricks are arranged at 45°.
The arrangement is such a way that the series remain in contact with the external line of stretchers.
At the ends, the bricks cut into triangular shape is placed.
This bond is best suitable for a wall to 2 to 4 thickness.
In herringbone bond, bricks are arranged at 45° in two opposite directions from the centre of wall thickness.
In every alternate course, the direction of bricks is changed.
This bond is best suitable for a wall of thickness above 4 bricks.
Raking bonds are provided between the two stretcher courses of the wall having a thickness equal to even multiple of half bricks.
This bond is used to provide an ornamental finish to the face of the wall and also used as flooring pattern.
