Sources of Building Stones
Building stones are obtained from rocks which contain one or more minerals.
These building stones are used in different components of a building.
The main sources for these building stones are natural building stones and artificial building stones.

Natural building stones are created by quarrying huge piece of rocks and dressing into different required shape.
Examples are granite, marble, limestone, sandstone etc.
Artificial building stones are made by mixing broken stone chips with resins or cement.
Examples are terrazzo, conglomerate, cultured marble etc.
Generally, the rocks available in nature are Monomineralic rocks and Polymineralic rocks.
Monomineralic rocks are those which contain only one mineral.
Examples are quartz sand, pure gypsum, magnesite etc.
Polymineralic rocks are those which contain two or more minerals.
Examples are granite, basalt etc.
The properties of rocks are governed by the properties of minerals present in it.
Thus, it is good to know about the source and type of rock present near a construction site.
