Linear Measurements in Surveying // Surveying Equipments // Linear Measurement Devices //

Linear measurements involve in the measurement of distances between the points on the earth surface.
There are various methods of performing linear measurements and their relative advantages depend upon the degree of precision (accuracy) required for surveying.

The methods are broadly classified into:

·         Direct measurements

·         Measurements by optical means

·         Electromagnetic methods

In direct measurements, the distances are measured on the ground with the help of instrument such as chain, tape etc.

In measurements by optical means, observations are done through a telescope and distances are calculated by manual calculation methods such as tacheometry or triangulation.

In electromagnetic methods, the measurements are calculated with the instruments that rely on propagation, reflection and subsequent reception of light, radio or infrared waves.

These methods will be explained in detail in the upcoming topics.
