You would have often noticed “Say no to plastic” logo’s stuck
In recent time, the replacement of plastic products has been high as they are considered major toxins for the earth.
For instance, the plastic carry bag has been replaced by the paper bag, jute bag etc.
Even so, we continued to use the plastic in large numbers as there is no replacement for some usage of plastics.
The most important usage of plastic is water bottles.
The amount of non-degradable waste generated because of plastic bottles is profoundly unsustainable.
In America alone, 35 billion plastic bottles were thrown out per year.
Many scientists were tried to find out a replacement for the plastic bottle.
Finally, a team from Skipping Rocks Lab discovered a biodegradable water bottle named “Ooho”.
Ooho
Ooho is tasteless liquid just like water and is made from a seaweed extract.
Ooho was first designed by the team at of chemists, engineers, designers and business advisors Skipping Rocks Lab founded by three London-based students.
After various design concepts, Ooho was the Skipping Rocks Lab first known concept.
This edible water bottle first brought to the public in the year 2013 and known to the world after received Lexus Design Award 2014.
Ooho not only satisfies the thirst and also encourage the consumer to drink more water.
Ooho is made by soaking ice cubes in a solution containing calcium chloride and brown algae.
After a while, a layer is formed around it which can be peeled off while consuming.
The edible water bottle is biodegradable expires in just 4 to 6 weeks from the date of manufacture.
Recently, Ooho is only sold at few company events at Boston, San Francisco and London.
Skipping rocks lab is all set to launch huge numbers of 7, 50,000 Ooho’s at UK events, Marathon and some other UK famous festival.
The team is waiting to see what an impact the Ooho will have on future.
Advantages of Ooho
Since Ooho’s are biodegradable, it can be easily swallowed and digested.
This biodegradable bubble can be made in different flavors.
The materials used for making Ooho is cheaper compared to the water bottle.
Using same technique, other liquid such as soft drinks, sprits etc., also can be manufactured.
This can be used for supplying liquids to the space programs as they find difficulty in throwing bottle wastes.
Disadvantages of Ooho
The major drawback of Ooho shorter life span, by the time it is being manufactured, transported and available for the customer, the Ooho’s almost near end of life.
The pioneers of Ooho are trying to implement seaweed in the packaging uses, we can expect a revolutionary change in the field of packing in the future.
