Engineer’s day is celebrated to honour Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, popularly called as Sir MV, on his birthday – 15 September.

After completing his college in Poona College of Engineering, he was directly offered a job as an assistant engineer in Public Works Department by Government of Bombay.
He made an automatic sluice gate which was used in Tigra Dam in Madhya Pradesh and KRS dam in Karnataka.
He refused the amount given for patenting the concept of sluice gate so that government can use it.
He introduced the block system of irrigation and water weir flood gates in Bombay.
He constructed many water supply project and railway bridges in Bihar and Orissa.
In 1908, he was given a Dewanship of Mysore and given the full responsibility of all development projects.
In 1955, he was given Bharat Ratna for contribution towards engineering.
He also received honorary awards and memberships from all over the world.
